What is Stress?

When our body encounters a stressful situation, stress hormones are released which trigger a fight or flight response. This also activates the immune system. This activation helps us to react quickly in situations that require urgent action. A natural example of this could be if you saw a lion running to attack you, your stress response would kick in and you would act quickly to either fight or run away (probably the latter).

As the example above shows, stress can be a useful to us. Additionally, it is not only dangerous situations in which stress can help us. If we are worried about an important exam coming up, stress can ensure that we work harder to do well in the exam. If the right amount of stress is present, this can be a positive and help you.

Unfortunately, stress can sometimes become too much and cause negative effects. If you are stressed for prolonged periods of time, you may be stuck in a fight or flight mode. This can have serious effects on your physical and mental health, especially if suffered for a long time.
