What is Allergies?

An allergy is an immune system response to a substance that is not typically harmful. These foreign substances are called allergens. Your immune system is designed to keep you healthy and fight off any foreign threats, however, some responses range from abnormal and annoying to life-threatening. These responses can be considered an overreaction to a foreign invader.

There are several types of allergic reactions including: rashes, hives, itching, swelling and inflammation (may lead to anaphylaxis – swelling of the throat and inability to breathe). Allergic reactions can start mild and increase in severity with repeat exposure to trigger allergens. Unfortunately, the research is uncertain as to why the immune response can be so severe and currently, there are no cures for allergies. Although, most allergies can be managed.

The best way to manage allergies is to avoid the allergens that trigger them. There are also a number of treatment options available to reduce the severity of the reactions and the occurrence of the symptoms. If you are worried about allergies affecting your everyday life, you should speak to your doctor about the options available that may help.
