What is Obesity?

There is a relatively simple method to checking if you are at a healthy weight. This check is called a BMI test. It stands for Body Mass Index and is a comparison between your height and weight to give a rough estimate of whether you are at a healthy weight or not.

The BMI numerical system works as follows:

  • At a rough estimate for the majority of adults, 18.5 to 24.9 indicates a healthy weight.
  • 25 to 29.9 indicates that you may be overweight.
  • 30 to 39.9 indicates that you could be obese.
  • 40 or above means that you are most likely severely obese.

This system is purely an indicator and is not used as a diagnostic tool for determining whether someone is obese. This is because muscle is heavy and people with high muscle mass but no fat could show up as overweight even though they are not.

It is important to tackle obesity due to the fact that it can lead to serious and life-threatening disease and conditions e.g. type 2 diabetes or coronary heart disease.
