What is Dementia?

What vast majority of people who develop dementia are over the age of 65; however, under 65s can also get dementia. This is referred to as younger-onset or early-onset dementia and can often go undiagnosed due to the younger age of the individual.

There are many different forms of dementia from the most common, Alzheimer’s disease to Vascular dementia which accounts for around 17% of dementia cases. The early signs of dementia usually start with frequent memory loss, especially information that has just been learnt. Other early signs range from confusion and changes in personality to the loss of ability to perform day to day tasks and activities.

Most cases of dementia are not inherited; however, there are some studies that suggest certain forms of dementia could be linked to genetics. Many conditions produce similar symptoms to dementia, so it is important to get a diagnosis if you feel that you or one of your friends and family could be experiencing symptoms.
