What is Diet and Nutrition?

In order to meet the average person’s dietary and nutritional requirements, there are certain foods that you should consume every day and certain amounts of each. These foods come from 5 main food groups which are:

  • Vegetables – 5 serves a day
  • Lean meats, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts seeds or beans – 2.5 to 3 serves a day
  • Fruit – 2 serves a day
  • Grains – 4 to 6 serves a day
  • Dairy or alternatives – 2.5 to 4 serves a day

These categories form the basis of a healthy diet. The amount of serves are recommended for adults and could be different for children or pregnant/breastfeeding women. It isn’t essential to eat from every food group at every meal, just make sure that you get your serves in throughout the day. It is also vital to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep hydrated.

One of the main reasons why we need a varied diet from these 5 food groups is to get the right nutrients into our body. Nutrients are important to our overall health and growth. Different types of food contain varying types and amounts of nutrients. This is why it is vital to eat a well balanced diet in order to receive all the nutrients that your body needs.

How much is a serve of each food group?

A serve of food can be different for each food group. For example, a typical serve of vegetables is roughly around 75g. The other 4 food groups serves are as follows:

  • Fruit serve – 150g
  • Grain serve – 500kJ
  • Lean meats, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts seeds or beans serve – 500-600kJ
  • Dairy or alternatives serve – 500-600kJ
What are the health risks posed by a lack of nutrition and a poorly balanced diet?

There are many health risks that can become prevalent if you do not receive the right amount of nutrients to meet your body’s demand. Simply lacking the nutrients that you need can cause malnutrition. This can weaken your immune system and result in a loss of weight muscle and hair. Another example is calcium deficiency. Over time, this could result in osteoporosis, a long-term disease that can weaken the strength of your bones.

What foods should I not be eating?

There are many foods that are detrimental to your health when eaten in high quantities and over a long period of time. Some examples of these foods and drinks are:

  • Takeaways such as burgers and chips
  • Cakes and biscuits

  • Sugary, carbonated drinks such as coke or lemonade
  • Alcoholic drinks
What are the risks of eating too much sugar, salt and fat?
