What is Cancer Prevention?

Many forms of cancer today are curable if the right treatment is offered and at an early enough stage of the condition. Whilst this is encouraging, the greatest thing that you can do to combat cancer is to start with preventative measures. The idea behind cancer prevention is to reduce the risk of developing cancer through healthy and beneficial lifestyle choices.

In order to understand which lifestyle choices are best partake in, we have to determine some of the main causes of preventable cancer. Some examples of these are:

  • Smoking
  • Drinking too much alcohol
  • Lack of exercise
  • Too much exposure to the sun (UV radiation)
  • Obesity
  • Poor diet

By making positive lifestyle choices, such as quitting smoking, it is possible to reduce your risk of cancer significantly. Additionally, when you choose to reduce your alcohol intake or increase your amount of exercise, you are not just helping yourself. Your actions are also helping others by reducing your chance of needing space in hospital or on treatment waiting lists.
