Mojo Klinik / About Us / Our approach

FUNCTIONAL, INTEGRATIVE, NUTRITIONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL MEDICINE

Our approach to integrative medicine.

Medicine that takes a full hour and asks a hundred questions.

What you eat. What you have been exposed to. What is
happening in your hormones, your gut, your immune system,
your mitochondria.

All of it on the table. None of it skipped.

WHAT MOJO MEANS TO US

Mojo is what this whole approach is built to find.

When something is in the way of how your body should be working, we go looking for it. The hormone that is not where it should be. The nutrient that is depleted. The exposure no one has investigated. The system that is overworking and the one that has gone quiet.

Mojo is the word we use for what comes back when we find what is in the way.

THE FOUR DISCIPLINES

Four overlapping disciplines. One way of practising.

We use the four together because no single discipline gives the full picture. The combination is what makes integrative medicine in Sydney worth seeking out.

01

THE THINKING

Functional medicine

Identifying the biological drivers behind a condition, not just naming it. Mechanism over label.

The clinical reasoning that asks why a body is presenting this way, not just what to call it. A label tells you what to call your problem. A mechanism tells you what to do about it. Functional medicine is the discipline of finding the mechanism. It looks at the body as a system of overlapping processes: hormonal regulation, metabolic function, immune balance, gut and microbiome, mitochondrial energy production, detoxification pathways. When one of these is off, others usually are too. We map them.

02

THE TOOLKIT

Integrative medicine

Conventional medical training plus lifestyle medicine, preventative medicine, and natural medicine approaches in one consultation.

Both Dr Mackey and Dr Varipatis are AHPRA registered medical doctors. The medical training is the same. Integrative medicine in Sydney adds the disciplines and modalities that conventional general practice does not have time or scope for in a standard ten-minute appointment. Prescription medication where it is clinically appropriate, alongside lifestyle, nutrition, supplementation, and structured behavioural work, all in one consultation. Coordinated, not fragmented.

03

THE FUEL

Nutritional medicine

The impact of what you eat, what you absorb, and what you are depleted in on every system in your body.

Almost every metabolic process needs nutrient cofactors. When they are
insufficient, the systems that depend on them stop working optimally. Your
symptoms follow. Standard nutrient testing detects clinical deficiency. It does not always detect functional insufficiency, which is where many of the patterns we see actually sit. We test at the active level where it matters, not just at serum.

04

THE EXPOSURES

Environmental medicine

Heavy metals, mould, mycotoxins, chemical load. The contributors most appointments never investigate.

Heavy metals from fillings, food, occupation, or environment. Mould and
mycotoxins from water-damaged buildings. Chemicals from pesticides,
plasticisers, industrial solvents. Indoor air quality and ventilation. These are not fringe contributors to chronic illness. The WHO lists mercury, lead, arsenic, and cadmium among the top ten chemicals of major public health concern globally.

"Integrative medicine is the tools. Functional medicine is how I think through which tools, and why. Nutritional and environmental medicine are where I look when nothing else has explained the picture."

TWO ARMS OF THE SAME APPROACH

How we look. What we look at.

Every consultation does two things.

HOW WE LOOK — THE CONSULTATION

A full hour for the initial appointment.

Comprehensive history. Review of every previous investigation, pathology
result, and treatment trial.

We do not start with a hypothesis and fit you to it. We gather the picture first and let the biology lead.

Mechanism over label. A label tells you what to call the problem. A mechanism tells you what to do about it.

Plain language explanations of what we found, what it means, and why every recommendation is on the plan.

WHAT WE LOOK AT — THE TERRITORY

Functional pathology where the standard panel stops.

Functional pathology where the standard panel stops. Hormone metabolism. Gut microbiome. Mitochondrial function. Detoxification pathways. Nutrient cofactors at the active level, not just serum.

Exposure history that most appointments never include. Occupational. Dental. Dietary. Environmental. Heavy metals. Mould and mycotoxins. Chemical load.

The patterns that connect them. Toxic exposures deplete the nutrients your body needs to detoxify them. Gut dysbiosis affects hormone clearance. Inflammation alters thyroid conversion. Nothing in the body works in isolation.

"Most chronic presentations have a clear narrative if you take the time to hear it. When did this start. What else was happening at that time. Has there been any period of improvement and if so what was different then. Those questions, asked carefully, almost always point toward a mechanism. The testing confirms it."

The training is the same. The time, the questions, and the testing are different.

HOW A MOJO KLINIK CONSULTATION DIFFERS FROM A STANDARD GP VISIT

STANDARD GP

MOJO KLINIK

Length

10 to 15 minutes

60 minutes initial. 30 to 45 minutes follow-up

Focus

Treat the presenting condition

Identify the contributing drivers

History

Today’s symptom and recent context

Full timeline. Exposures, occupational, dental, dietary, environmental

Testing

Standard pathology

Functional pathology, hormone mapping, gut microbiome, environmental testing

Treatment

Follow-up

Return if it gets worse

Structured review, paced to your biology

Both Dr Mackey and Dr Varipatis are AHPRA registered medical doctors. This is what makes a functional medicine doctor in Sydney worth the longer appointment.

WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE AT YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT

One hour. Full history. Examination where indicated. Initial clinical impression. Plan for next steps. Functional pathology where it is indicated, ordered with your consent and explained before it is run.

Your full treatment plan is finalised at your follow-up appointment after results are in.
