WHAT DR MACKEY IS KNOWN FOR CLINICALLY
The presentations that sit between a diagnosis and wellness.
That grey zone between health and disease. The chronic fatigue that is not quite CFS. The thyroid that is not quite hypothyroid. The perimenopausal transition that is not quite menopause. The gut that has carried an IBS label for ten years and never been investigated. To Dr Maria Mackey, functional medicine is built for these patients. That is the territory she has dedicated her practice to.
What Dr Mackey means by getting your mojo back
Mojo is what walks back in once the underlying biology starts cooperating again.
Hormones that move with you. A gut that is quiet and does what it’s meant to. Energy that does not crash. A mind that is sharp. Sleep that restores.
Her job is to find the biological reason it has gone missing, and to build the plan that brings it back.

FIT CHECK
Is Dr Mackey the right doctor for you?
YES — THIS IS FOR YOU
- You are a man or woman in your late thirties, forties, or fifties who knows something has changed
- You are in perimenopause and have been told your hormones look fine on a single blood test
- You have IBS, SIBO, daily bloating, or growing food intolerances
- You have a thyroid result that fits inside the reference range while your symptoms do not
- You are exhausted, foggy, and have been told it is stress
- You want a doctor who will run a full thyroid panel, not just a TSH
THIS MAY NOT BE THE RIGHT FIT
- You want a fast script with no investigation
- You want a single supplement and a generic protocol
- You want a clinic that replaces your endocrinologist or psychiatrist
How Dr Mackey works with you.
She does not begin with a hypothesis and fit you to it. She gathers your full picture first and lets the biology lead. She is known for asking questions no other doctor has asked, for explaining findings in a way that finally makes sense of years of unexplained symptoms, and for building plans that are specific, practical, and reviewed over time.
01 Comprehensive
history first
Your full clinical picture before any hypothesis. Symptoms, exposures, life context, what changed and when.
02 Targeted investigation
Testing matched to your specific
picture, not a default panel.
Functional pathology where
it is indicated, ordered with
your consent.
Address the biological driver. Not
the surface label. A label tells you
what to call it. A mechanism tells
you what to do about it.
You will know what was found, what it means, and what we are doing about it. Every recommendation has a clear reason.
"My job is to understand your specific picture well enough that the plan writes itself from the evidence. No generic protocols. I tell you what I see in your biology, what I think we need to do, and why. In plain language. With a reason for every recommendation."

CLINICAL FOCUS
What Dr Mackey treats.
Her practice is centred on the presentations where conventional medicine most often reaches its limits.
This is the area of her practice that draws the most patients. She maps your hormones comprehensively. DUTCH testing. Full thyroid panel. HbA1c and metabolic markers. Cortisol profiling. Full sex hormone mapping. Not the TSH and oestradiol approach that defines most standard care. She understands perimenopause as a 10 to 15 year biological process, not a single event.
"Why is the most predictable transition in women’s health still the most underdiagnosed? Symptoms can begin in the late thirties. Most women are told they are too young, or that their hormones look fine on a single blood test drawn on the wrong day. The bloods often look normal because the reference ranges were not built for a body in transition."
Dr Maria Mackey, MBChB. FRACGP. FAARM. Mojo Klinik Founder
Full thyroid panel as standard. TSH, free T4, free T3, reverse T3, and antibodies. TSH alone does not tell the full clinical story. T3 conversion is affected by stress, gut dysbiosis, nutrient status, and inflammation. Hashimoto’s as an autoimmune process needs a different approach to simple hypothyroidism.
Fatigue is the most common presenting complaint in her practice. She takes it seriously. Investigation includes 4-point urinary hormone testing, mitochondrial markers, nutrient status, inflammatory drivers, thyroid conversion, gut function, and sleep architecture. Care is structured, individualised, and paced to where you are starting from.
Dr Mackey leads the gut health practice at Mojo Klinik. She works with patients carrying long-standing IBS diagnoses who have never been investigated for SIBO, with daily bloating, with growing food intolerances, with a gut that has been treated as a label rather than a clinical problem. Testing includes SIBO breath testing, comprehensive microbiome analysis, intestinal permeability markers, and OAT where indicated. Treatment is matched to what the testing actually shows. She also
designed the 6-Week Express Detox, a structured medically supervised gut and liver reset, offered through her personal practice site at drmariamackey.com.au.
Insulin resistance assessed using HbA1c, fasting glucose, and the triglyceride to HDL ratio. Significant insulin resistance can exist alongside a completely normal fasting glucose. Standard markers miss it. Treatment combines functional pathology, individualised dietary frameworks, targeted supplementation, lifestyle work, and prescription medication where clinically appropriate.
Investigated with the same rigour as ME/CFS. Oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, immune panels, inflammatory cytokines, and viral reactivation testing. Long COVID, post-viral fatigue syndrome, and ME/CFS share biological mechanisms but respond to different clinical approaches. Dr Mackey distinguishes between them.
Investigated where the clinical picture indicates: persistent unexplained symptoms, neurological complaints, fatigue that has not responded to other workup, autoimmune presentations, or significant occupational or environmental exposure history. Assessment includes provoked urine testing, hair tissue mineral analysis where appropriate, and whole blood metals. Dr Mackey treats both adults and children. A different pathway applies to paediatric patients, where chelation is not used.
Medically supervised chelation for patients with confirmed heavy metal burden after appropriate testing. Protocols are individualised based on the metal profile, your renal and overall health, and clinical context. Sessions are paced and monitored, with concurrent essential mineral support and ongoing review. Conservative and evidence led. Used where it is indicated, not as a routine wellness intervention.
Used where the clinical picture justifies it. Malabsorption. Post-viral recovery. Demonstrated nutrient deficiencies. Fatigue presentations where oral repletion is not enough. Patients in structured detoxification. Every IV is preceded by a medical assessment. No wellness drips on demand. The IV is part of a broader clinical plan.
Cosmetic practice informed by integrative medicine. The skin is an organ whose health reflects internal biology. Hormonal status. Nutrient state. Inflammatory load. Gut health. Treatments offered include Emcyte PRP, skin needling (collagen induction therapy), SQT Bio-Microneedling, Aptos thread procedures, Onda body and facial contouring (skin tightening), medical skin peels, and doctor administered cosmetic injection services. For her broader cosmetic offering, see Regenerative Cosmetic Medicine and mojocosmeticclinic.com.au.
"I approach cosmetic medicine the way I approach everything else. Mechanism before label. If there is a hormonal driver, a nutrient deficiency, or a gut issue presenting on yourface, treating only the surface gives you only surface results. The face follows the biology underneath."

FrequentlyAsked Questions.
What is Dr Mackey’s clinical area of focus?
Dr Mackey at Mojo Klinik has her deepest clinical interest in the hormonal
and metabolic health of women across the reproductive lifespan and
through perimenopause and menopause, alongside IBS, SIBO and gut
health. She is particularly focused on the presentations that sit between a
diagnosis and wellness: the chronic fatigue that is not quite CFS, the thyroid
that is not quite hypothyroid, the perimenopausal transition that is not quite
menopause. These are the cases where integrative medicine has the most to
offer and where she has the most clinical depth.
"The patient who most often comes to see me has been told her results are normal but knows her body has changed. She is tired in a way sleep does not fix. Her mood has shifted. Her weight is behaving differently. Her thyroid has been checked and called fine. She is right. Symptoms are signal, not noise. There is almost always a clinical explanation."
Dr Maria Mackey, MBChB. FRACGP. FAARM. Mojo Klinik Founder
Does Dr Mackey see male patients?
Yes. Dr Mackey sees patients of all genders. Her areas of deep focus include
presentations that are statistically more common in women, but her
integrative and functional medicine approach applies equally to male
patients with chronic fatigue, metabolic syndrome, gut disorders, thyroid
dysfunction, and other complex presentations.
"Men often leave things until it is late, they prioritise other things ahead of themselves. Work, family, their social life and will present when the ‘wheels are ready to roll off ’ so to speak."
Dr Maria Mackey, MBChB. FRACGP. FAARM. Mojo Klinik Founder
Can Dr Mackey help if I have already tried everything?
This is the most common situation her patients come from. Many have
already tried multiple GPs, seen endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, or
rheumatologists, and have a file full of normal results. Dr Mackey’s approach
is not to repeat what has already been done. It is to assess what has not
been done, using functional testing that goes well beyond the standard
panel, and to look at the pattern across biological systems rather than each
system in isolation.
"When a patient tells me she has tried everything, I ask what has actually been tested. Usually: standard bloods, a TSH, a few specialist panels. That is a starting point, not a complete picture. The functional markers, the cortisol rhythm, the gut microbiome, the mitochondrial markers, those are not part of standard care. We have not tried everything until we have looked at those."

How long are Dr Mackey’s appointments?
Initial consultations are one hour. Follow-up consultations run 30 to 45
minutes. Longer initial appointments are necessary because the
comprehensive history, review of previous results, and clinical reasoning
that defines functional medicine cannot be done in a standard
consultation length.
Does Dr Mackey offer telehealth?
Yes for existing patients on follow-up consultations, available Australia wide.
New patients are ideally seen in person at Neutral Bay for the initial
appointment. Medicare rebates apply for in-person initial consultations and
for telehealth follow-ups taken after your first in-person visit. If you live away
from Sydney a Telehealth consultation can be arranged.
