What is Recurring/Chronic Infections?

A key part of a recurring and persistent infection is a mixture of a reduction of defences from a host’s immune system and the ability of the virus to destroy cells. Certain types of viruses, such as many arenaviruses, do not kill cells and can cause a persistent infection if the sufferer cannot clear the virus due to a lack of immune response.

Sometimes, viruses that attack the body with alternative cycles of virion production and dormancy. For example, the Epstein-Barr virus presents an initial fever, swollen lymph glands and a sore throat. Once these symptoms subside, the virus produces a dormant infection. This infection presents a viral genome in immune system cells which allows for reactivation of the virus and the ability to pass onto other hosts.

Some other examples of chronic infections are:

  • AIDs
  • Chronic hepatitis
  • Chronic measles encephalitis
  • Chronic papovaviral encephalitis
